Beginners generally need somewhere between 6 months and 2 years to break 100, and the actual pace depends on how often you practise, the quality of the coaching, and your athletic background. With regular weekly practice (both the range and the course) plus a coach working on the fundamentals, many people reach the goal within 3 to 6 months.
Breaking 100 takes more than better ball striking - it takes course strategy working together with the fundamentals. Give the short game and putting inside 100 yards the attention they deserve: 1) A high proportion of your strokes happen inside 100 yards, and putting alone is usually 30 to 40 of them. Working on putting and chipping takes far more strokes off your card than chasing driving distance. 2) Cut out the big mistakes. Avoid OB and penalty strokes off the tee, play for the green in three and two putts, and stacking up steady bogeys will get you under 100 more reliably than attacking every pin. 3) Keep practice regular. Compared with playing once every few months, a fixed weekly range session plus regular rounds builds a repeatable swing and tempo far faster.
