New golfers often assume Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5 simply describe how long the hole is. What matters more is the concept of par itself.
Par is the number of strokes a skilled player is expected to need to complete a hole under normal conditions. It assumes reaching the green and then taking two putts.
Holes are generally classified by length: - Par 3: up to about 250 yards - Par 4: about 251-470 yards - Par 5: about 471 yards and up (Actual lengths vary with course design and which tee you play from.) The one line worth remembering from the card: Par = strokes expected to reach the green + 2 putts Par 3: 1 to the green + 2 putts = 3 Par 4: 2 to the green + 2 putts = 4 Par 5: 3 to the green + 2 putts = 5
